5 TIPS FOR INDIE GAME PRODUCER

Recently in Vietnam, there is a new trend of seeking a job in Game Studio, especially is the Game Producer or Product Owner role. There are thousands of articles, job descriptions, and requirements to read about this title, including its qualification, related experiences. A Product Owner for Mobile Game industry could come from different background, even industries; putting lots of afford to learn, pursue the dream of having Global or Top-tier product is not just only a mere goal or a pile of money, but also a certificate of creativity, plus productivity in those years of development.

To learn how to design and become a Game Producer / Product Owner, there are few things to know, to do it daily little by little:

  • Always make the prototype for your game: the idea is to keep pushing for a valid build. Do not hesitate to make anything from your ideas. In many cases, working as a solo or with a miniature group shall be a challenge for everyone since you might want to do everything with less effort but high return. The chance of not only getting one game on the store but also become successful is scarce.
  • Make it simple and aim for simplicity with the core gameplay: it doesn’t mean that the product needs to make it perfect right away. Many plausible arguments between generations regarding the “how”, also “what should be done” to keep the game simple. The best thing for all indie studios is to keep the game flow light, enjoyable from the moment of opening the game on their devices. The best way to do this step is on Papers.

  • Be a judge - be fair: don’t get into bias as playing as the owner of the game. Keep the users close enough to learn insights and traction, so that the Product Owner doesn’t lead the whole studio into a rabbit hole.
  • Be good with copy: it’s always good to keep producing games with the same idea on markets. The more a Product Owner can produce, is the better to explore the old product; decide what needs to change for the audience.
  • Don’t create games for all people: as Product Owner, choosing a set of target audience wisely because, to be honest, the game can’t satisfy everyone.
  • Knowing the differences: a Product Owner in the Game Industry should be able to tell the game divergent. A game could not represent a set of genres, but rather be a symbol of a specific one.
